StanKraft will customize your faceplate materials and design to the end-user environment. There are 2 basic types of materials, Polycarbonate and Polyester. Let us know how and where your switch will be used so we can design it to best fit your use.

Colors: StanKraft can match a sample or Pantone color.

Textures: Clear (glossy), antiglare, matte, fine velvet and velvet textures are available. The polycarbonate materials are also available in a coarser suede texture.

Embossing: The entire area or perimeter of the switch position is raised (approximately 0.012 inch) . There are a variety of combinations as well, including dimpled or double (step) embossed switch positions and domed LED windows.

Pockets and Inserts: Pockets can be incorporated into a faceplate design to accommodate Inserts for alternative legends.

Fiber Optic or electroluminescent backlighting can be incorporated into your design for applications in dim or dark environments.

Top Adhesive Carrier2
We use high performance 3M Acrylic Adhesives for your designs, the best available, with all the test data and field experience that 3M has to offer.

Back to TopTop Circuit/Retaining Cover3
If your circuit calls for an X-Y (row & column) matrix, you'll have a top and bottom circuit with circuit traces leading out to a single-in-line connector with male or female contacts, with or without housing, with various contact plating options. RoHs-compliant switches are available upon request.

7We typically use AMP or Berg crimp connectors on 0.1 inch centers-these provide a gas tight connection to the circuit tail conductors.

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection using a FULL FOIL SHIELD or GRIP/LOOP is optional but recommended.

Spacer4
The double sided adhesive is designed to separate the top and bottom circuit contacts while holding the layers together. This also provides internal switch to switch venting, and a pocket in which the stainless steel domes are retained.

Back to TopTactile Response5
Flat Switch

  • Non tactile
  • Requires a top and bottom circuit separated by a spacer layer

Tactile Switch
Snap action response
uses either of two constructions: stainless steel or polyester domes.

Note: Membrane switches are normally open, single pole switches. They do not latch in the on position. Your electronics will need to perform that function if desired. They have an operating temperature range of -40 degrees to +85 degrees standard.

This is the other printed contact layer of the circuit. In some cases involving a tactile switch in which there is no top circuit, this layer contains both sets of contacts for each switch position. The stainless steel dome then serves to short the two contacts together. Please also identify the length of tail you desire, the circuit configuration and the tail exit point and direction. The tail may exit behind the switch (recessed tail) or at the perimeter.

Embedded LEDs
Alternately, we can design your membrane switch with embedded LEDs and on a PC board.

Soldering the LEDs to a PC board is one of the most reliable ways of bonding the LEDs to a membrane switch. In this case the LED windows should be embossed to provide clearance for the LED height.

Bottom Adhesive Carrier8
This bottom adhesive comes with a peel off liner so the switch may be applied and mounted directly to a rigid surface or front panel. Please advise us of the intended mounting configuration and surface material and surface texture (if any) so we may select the appropriate 3M adhesive.

Aluminum or steel: This can be an aluminum (clear black or anodized), or steel (painted or plated), with various plating options, standoffs, PEM studs, cutouts, etc. If you'd like us to provide your switch with a panel, just let us know.

  Behind the Scenes
graphic
At StanKraft, we take the making of a switch seriously. Our engineering team reviews every switch design submitted to ensure proper product performance. (In fact, we will raise a red flag if we think your design has a flaw; we don’t blindly follow drawings.) We use CAD to make certain the parts for each layer align correctly. To guarantee a lengthy product life, we purchase the best available raw materials – from 3M adhesives and DuPont conductive inks to Autotype or Tekra polyesters. And whether an order calls for 10 prototypes or 1000 switches, we test each and every switch before they leave our shipping dock.
